History of Anacortes
Anacortes is a city in Washington State located on Fidalgo Island in the San Juan Islands archipelago. The name “Anacortes” is a blend of the name of Anna Curtis, the wife of early settler Amos Bowman, and the Spanish word for an uncultivated field or thistle patch.
Anacortes was officially incorporated on May 19, 1891 with a population of 1,200. Amos Bowman had first settled on the island in the 1860s, and by the late 1880s, the town of Anacortes was a thriving community with a sawmill, a shipyard, and a cannery.
The early years of Anacortes were shaped by the timber and fishing industries. The forests of the Pacific Northwest provided ample opportunity for the lumber industry, and Anacortes became a major shipping point for lumber. The town also became known for its halibut fisheries, and by the early 1900s, Anacortes was one of the largest ports for halibut in the world.
The lumber and fishing industries led to a boom in Anacortes’ population and economy in the early years, but they also created environmental problems. Deforestation led to soil erosion, and overfishing led to a decline in the halibut population. These problems, along with a general economic downturn in the 1920s, caused a decline in Anacortes’ fortunes in the early years of the twentieth century.
The city began to rebound in the 1930s, due in part to the initiatives of the Civilian Conservation Corps, which helped to replant the forests and improve the infrastructure of the town. The industrial economy also began to recover, thanks in part to the establishment of the Mobil Oil refinery in the 1930s.
The economy of Anacortes was transformed in the 1940s with the construction of the Grand Coulee Dam. The dam created a massive new market for the electricity generated by the water power of the Columbia River, and the Mobile Oil refinery was expanded to meet the demand for fuel. These two projects brought new jobs and prosperity to Anacortes and helped to solidify its position as a regional center.
Despite these successes, the timber and fishing industries continued to decline in the second half of the twentieth century. This decline was offset by the growth of new industries, such as aluminum production and boatbuilding.
