History of Amsterdam
In the United States, the history of Amsterdam begins in the 17th century, when Dutch settlers founded the first European settlement in presentday New York state. The settlement, known as Fort Orange, was located at the confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk rivers.
In 1626, the Dutch West India Company purchased the island of Manhattan from the native Lenape people for 60 guilders. Three years later, the company dispatched a small fleet of ships to establish a permanent settlement on the island. The fleet, which included the ships Nieuw Amsterdam and De Halve Maen, arrived in the fall of 1609 and established a colony on the southern tip of Manhattan.
The Dutch colony of New Amsterdam quickly grew into a thriving trading hub. Furs, timber, and tobacco were among the goods traded with other European colonies and with indigenous peoples in presentday Canada and the American Midwest. Within a few years, the Dutch colony had a population of more than 600, making it the largest European settlement in North America at the time.
In 1664, English forces conquered New Netherland and renamed the colony New York. Amsterdam became one of the colony’s four major cities, along with New York City, Albany, and Buffalo. The city thrived in the 18th and 19th centuries as a regional center of trade and manufacturing.
Today, Amsterdam is a vibrant city of about 18,000 people located in the Mohawk Valley region of upstate New York. The city’s rich history is reflected in its architecture, which includes a number of wellpreserved 17th and 18thcentury Dutch buildings. Amsterdam is also home to a number of museums, including the Muesum of Visual Art, which houses a collection of works by famous Dutch artists.
