History of American Fork
American Fork is a city in Utah County, Utah, United States, on the northeastern shore of Utah Lake. It is roughly 20 miles (32 km) from Salt Lake City. The population of American Fork was 28,226 at the 2010 census.
Historically, American Fork was an agricultural community, known for its fruit orchards. The city has since developed rapidly, with much of the growth due to the technological boom in Utah during the 1980s and 1990s. American Fork was the location of the fatal 1993 school shooting at Frontier Middle School.
The area around Utah Lake was used as a hunting and fishing ground by the Ute Indians. American Fork was settled in 1850 by Mormon pioneers, and was named after the American Fork River which flows through the city. A fort was built in 1851 to protect settlers from the native tribes.
In 1852, American Fork was made the county seat of Utah County. The city began to grow as more settlers arrived. In 1856, the first church was built in the city. The city was incorporated in 1858.
The American Fork Cooperative Creamery was founded in 1869, and became one of the largest creameries in the state. The sugar beet industry also began in American Fork during this time.
American Fork was reached by the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad in 1873, which boosted economic growth. The city became known for its fruit orchards, and earned the title of “Fruit Way City.”
In the 1950s, the city began to grow rapidly, due to the suburbanization of the Salt Lake Valley. The city annexations during this time increased the city’s land area to over five times its original size.
The city continued to grow during the 1980s and 1990s, as the technological boom in Utah led to the establishment of several hightech companies in the area. The population of American Fork doubled between 1980 and 2000.
The city has experienced several notable events in recent years, including the fatal school shooting at Frontier Middle School in 1993, and the unmasking of serial killer Mark Hacking in 2004.
