History of Amarillo
Amarillo is a city in the northern Texas Panhandle. It is the 14thmost populous city in the state of Texas and the largest city in the Texas Panhandle. A distinct fourstate metropolitan area covers most of the Panhandle and includes Amarillo, Borger, and Canadian in Texas, Guymon in Oklahoma, and Boise City in Oklahoma. The 2010 census reported Amarillo’s population as 190,695. Amarillo is the anchorage of the panhandle region and the headquarters of the Amarillo metropolitan statistical area, which encompasses all of Carson, Potter, and Randall Counties. The city was once the selfproclaimed “Helium Capital of the World” for having one of the country’s most productive helium fields. It is home to the headquarters of numerous corporations, including Bell Helicopter Textron, Xcel Energy, Amarillo National Bank, Northwest Texas Healthcare System, and the GeorgiaPacific Corporation, as well as the Western Hemisphere’s largest general motors assembly plant.
