The Amana Colonies are located in Iowa County in eastcentral Iowa, United States, Amana is approximately 30mi west of Cedar Rapids and 70mi north of Iowa City.
The Amana Colonies were founded in 1855 by German Pietists, who were searching for a place where they could practice their religious beliefs free from persecution. All of the Amana Villages were built without nails, using only wooden pegs. The roofs were covered with thatch or slate. Until 1932, all of the Villages were selfsufficient, with everyone sharing in the work required to sustain the community. The Amana Society, which governed the Colonies, owned all the land and businesses and divided the profits among the members.
In 1932, the Amana Society decided to disband and form a corporation, Amana Society, Inc., to administer the business affairs of the Amana Colonies. In 1934, Amana Society, Inc., began selling electricity to the Iowa Utilities Board. In the 1940s, Amana Society, Inc., started selling other products, including meat and wool, outside of the Amana Colonies. In the 1950s, Amana Society, Inc., began selling refrigerators and ranges to the general public. In 1955, Amana Society, Inc., was dissolved and the Amana Corporation was formed to run the business affairs of the Amana Colonies.
The Amana Corporation continued to operate the Amana Refrigeration division and the Amana Woolen Mill. In the 1960s, Amana introduced the Radarange, the first microwave oven for home use. Amana also manufactured the first sidebar refrigerator. In the 1970s, Amana expanded its product line to include room air conditioners and building products such as steel doors and windows. In the 1980s, Amana moved into the business of making heating and cooling products for commercial use. Amana also acquired GPeace, a company that manufactures commercial food service equipment.
Today, Amana is a global leader in commercial and residential heating and cooling solutions. Amana’s products are sold in more than 100 countries. The Amana brand is owned by Goodman Global, Inc.

The Amana Corporation, which once operated as a collective, closed its last Amana Societyowned retail operation in the Amana Colonies in 2009. The Amana Society, which owns all the property in the Amana Colonies, continues to lease land and buildings to individuals and businesses. Individual Amana Colonies residents own homes and cottages, while businesses and Amana Society operations lease shopfronts, restaurants, hotels, apartments, and other buildings.
