The land that would become Douglas County was first settled by European Americans in 1858, although there had been earlier Native American settlement in the area. The following year, the town’s first bank, the First National Bank of Alexandria, was established. In 1888, the Minneapolis, Sault Ste. Marie, and Atlantic Railroad reached Alexandria, further boosting the city’s growth.
