In the mid1840s, settlers began moving into southern Minnesota. One of these settlers was Horace Albert Wood, who built a log cabin near the presentday site of Albert Lea in 1844. The city of Albert Lea is named for Wood, who became the first postmaster of the area in 1852.

The city officially incorporated in 1858, and Wood was elected as its first mayor. Albert Lea quickly became a regional center for trade and transportation, due to its location at the intersection of two major Native American trails. The city continued to grow throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, reaching a peak population of nearly 10,000 in 1960.

Since then, the city’s population has declined slightly, but remains around 9,000 today. Albert Lea is home to a number of schools and businesses, and is a popular tourist destination due to its many lakes and parks.
