The city officially incorporated in 1858, and Wood was elected as its first mayor. Albert Lea quickly became a regional center for trade and transportation, due to its location at the intersection of two major Native American trails. Since then, the city’s population has declined slightly, but remains around 9,000 today. Albert Lea is home to a number of schools and businesses, and is a popular tourist destination due to its many lakes and parks.
