History of Albany (New York)
The first Europeans to settle in the area of presentday Albany were the Dutch in the early 1600s. The small settlement they established at Fort Orange became one of the busiest trading posts in New Netherland. In 1614, the Dutch completed a stockade for Fort Nassau, which was located about a mile south of Fort Orange, and began to move some of their operations there. Fort Nassau became the primary Dutch settlement in the area and the base for the young colony’s expanding trade with the Mohawk people, who occupied the fertile valley to the west.
The English took control of the colony from the Dutch in 1664 and renamed it New York. Under English rule, Albany grew steadily as a commercial and governmental center. By 1707, the year of the Acts of Union between England and Scotland, Albany had become the capital of New York Colony. In 1754, representatives of seven colonies met in Albany to discuss common defense against the French and Indian threat. This meeting, known as the Albany Congress, was the first step in the formation of the United States of America.
During the American Revolution, Albany served as a major supply center for the Continental Army. After the war, Albany’s importance as a center of trade and government helped it to grow rapidly. In the early 1800s, it was the capital of the state of New York and the meeting place of the state legislature. Albany’s prominence as a governmental center began to decline in the mid1800s, however, when the state government was moved first to New York City and then to the new state capital of Albany.
Despite its declining role as a governmental center, Albany continued to grow as a commercial hub. The opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 made Albany an important link in the trade route between the Midwest and the East Coast. The city’s population more than doubled between 1820 and 1830, and it became the thirdlargest city in the state by the end of the century.
In the mid1900s, Albany experienced a renaissance as state government once again became a major presence in the city. The construction of a new state capital complex in the 1960s reinvigorated the downtown area, and the city has continued to grow in recent years. Today, Albany is a vibrant city with a rich history and a bright future.
