History of Akron
The city of Akron was founded in 1825 by Simon Perkins and Paul Manning. Akron was named after the Greek word meaning “high point” because it was located on a high point between the Cuyahoga and Tuscarawas Rivers. The city began as a small farming community and grew quickly after the opening of the Ohio and Erie Canal in 1827.
Akron became an important industrial city in the late 19th century due to its location at the intersection of several major railroads. The city’s largest employer was the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, which was founded in 1898. Other major industries in Akron included glassmaking, brewing, and machine tool manufacturing.
The city continued to grow in the 20th century, reaching a peak population of nearly 340,000 in 1970. However, Akron’s population began to decline in the 1980s as manufacturing jobs disappeared. The city has since rebounded somewhat, and its population was estimated at 198,000 in 2018.
