Abington is one of the oldest communities in Montgomery County and one of the first settlements in the Delaware Valley region.
Abington was originally part of Philadelphia County, and was incorporated as a township in 1704. The township was named after Anne VenablesBarkham, the daughter of William Penn and the first Quaker woman to settle in the area. William Penn had originally wanted to name the area Abingdon, after a town in England, but Anne’s mother convinced him to name it after her instead.
Abington played a significant role in the American Revolutionary War. The Battle of Edge Hill, the first major engagement of the war, took place in Abington. And the Continental Army marched through Abington on its way to the Battle of Bunker Hill in Boston.
In the 19th century, the arrival of the railroad brought new opportunities and prosperity to Abington.
