History of Aberdeen (Washington)
Prior to the arrival of European settlers, the area now known as Aberdeen was inhabited by the Quinault and Chehalis Indian tribes. The first European settlers to arrive in the area were the Wilkes expedition in 1841, followed by a group of settlers led by Isaac N. Ebey in 1847. Ebey claimed land along the Chehalis River, and built a house and gristmill.
Aberdeen was officially platted in 1884, and incorporated as a city in 1890. The city was named for a Scottish city by one of its early settlers, Alexander Marshall. Marshall also established the first bank in Aberdeen.
The economy of Aberdeen was originally based on timber and fishing. The city became a hub for the lumber industry, with several sawmills and shingle mills operating within its borders. Fishing was also a major industry, with the city’s location on the mouth of the Chehalis River making it a natural hub for commercial and sport fishing.
In the early 1900s, Aberdeen began to grow as a center for shipbuilding. The World War I era saw a boom in the shipbuilding industry, as the city was home to several large shipyards.
