History of Abbeville (South Carolina)
Abbeville is a city in Abbeville County, South Carolina, United States, 86 miles (138 km) west of Columbia and 35 miles (56 km) south of Greenville. The population was 5,237 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Abbeville County.
Abbeville was founded in 1764 by French Huguenots. It is named after the town of Abbeville in France. South Carolina Highway 28 passes through the center of the city.
The earliest recorded European settlement in what is today known as Abbeville County was by French Protestants, who arrived in 1685 seeking religious freedom. Led by Joseph DuBose, they settled at a location known as Long Cane (near presentday Long Canes Creek in McCormick County, South Carolina).
In 1764 a group of French Huguenots led by Jean Courtot arrived in South Carolina from England. They were families from the small town of Abbeville in the Province of France. The town is located in the southwest of France about 120 miles from the city of Paris. It is the capital of the French department of the Somme.
The Courtot family and their companions settled near what is now known as downtown Abbeville. They named their new community “Abbeville”, after their hometown in France.
When the American Revolution began in 1775, there were several dozen families living in Abbeville. They were all staunch supporters of the Patriot cause. In fact, the town was so actively proAmerican that the British burned it twice during the course of the war.
The first time was in 1781, when Colonel Banastre Tarleton occupied the town en route to his famous raid on nearby Newberry. The second time was in 1787, when British troops under General Alexander Leslie raided the town as part of a campaign to quell an uprising by Loyalist settlers in the area.
Despite these setbacks, Abbeville quickly rebuilt and prospered in the years following the war. In 1791 the state legislature designated Abbeville as the county seat of Abbeville County, which had been created out of land taken from NinetySix and Edgefield counties.
